New Air Service - Mammoth Yosemite Airport

Alas, there is convenient air service from Los Angeles, California to Mammoth Lakes, California to get to Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. The service is provided by Horizon's Air (a subsidiary of Alaska Air) and daily scheduled flights begin on December 18, 2008. Prior to the 2008/2009 ski season, the first few flights were already sold out and there may be a second daily flight coming online soon.

Flights will only run between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Mammoth Yosemite Airport (MLH) but that should still accomodate all prospective visitors since most airports have flights to LAX. Then passengers simply transfer to the Horizon Air flight in Los Angeles for a 50 minute flight to Mammoth.
Horizon's flight to Mammoth will be operated with the airline's Bombardier Q400. This 74/76-seat, high-speed, twin-engine turboprop is one of the most technologically advanced regional aircraft in the world. It's as quiet and comfortable as a jet - thanks to its special technology that suppresses noise and vibration, its generously sized overhead storage bins, its unobstructed under-seat space, and its ample headroom (6 feet 5 inches). The Q400 is also among the most environmentally friendly aircraft today, burning 30 percent less fuel and producing 30 percent lower emissions than comparable jets.

Horizon's fleet serves 48 cities throughout Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Baja California Sur (Mexico), and British Columbia and Alberta (Canada). Together, Horizon Air and Alaska Airlines serve 93 cities and are subsidiaries of Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE:ALK).
Most of the lodging reservation companies have agreed to provide keys at the airport terminal for those guests with reservations so that passengers can go directly to their accommodations without having to make stops at the reservation companies to pick up the keys. There will also be public transportation on buses that will go from the airport to Mammoth Mountain lodging destinations. Alternative transporation will also be available such as the in town shuttle and taxi cabs. Rental cars will also be available at the airport.
Long gone will be the days of packing up the car for a 5 or 6 hours drive to Mammoth and the same for the return trip. The only catch? There will be extra charges for oversized baggage, so if you are a die hard for Mammoth, we suggest you look into purchasing a storage space or renting space to store your larger items rather than lugging them on a plane back and forth and paying a fee (more than the cost of a one way flight) to bring your equipment with you each time.
